European Agricultural Youth Championship starts in late May

The European Agricultural Youth Championship, a major Presidency event organised under the auspices of the Minister of Agriculture, the Minister of Education and the Presidents of the Central Bohemian, South Bohemian and Vysočina Regions, will take place from 19 to 22 May in Benešov, Třeboň and Humpolec.

At the same time, the Czech Republic will host the spring meeting of EUROPEA INTERNATIONAL, an international association of agricultural colleges and training institutes from EU-27 and Norway, which organises regular European Agricultural Youth Championships focusing on viticulture and forestry. The Czech Republic has been a member of this association since 2005 and it is the first time that it holds the championship, during which European participants will compete in the categories floristry, fishing and agricultural technique.

The floristry competition will take place at the Agricultural College and Agricultural Secondary School in Benešov, which is the EUROPEA CZECH REPUBLIC national coordinator organising all four parts of the competition: arrangements in pots for floral decoration of the school building, element of surprise, recognizing plant material and wedding bouquets. The bouquets will be presented during a public fashion show held in the building of Benešov Comprehensive School on 21 May from 5 p.m.

The fishing competition will take place in the Jakub Krčín Secondary School of Fishery and Water Management in Třeboň, in the following disciplines: identification of fresh-water fishes, boat ride with a pole and sport fishing. The last competition, focusing on agricultural technique, will take place at the Czech Agricultural Academy in Humpolec and it will test pupils and students in driving a tractor with a trailer, scything, hand milking and guessing animal weight.

The championship will host around 260 participants including the delegations of the spring session of EUROPEA INTERNATIONAL. About 20 teams will compete in each of the three competitions, each team comprising 2 students and 1 teacher.

Results will be announced and prizes awarded to winners on 22 May at 14:00 at the Ministry of Agriculture in the presence of the Agriculture Minister.

Tereza Dvorácková
Spokeswoman of the Ministry of Agriculture
