Meeting of the Steering Committee of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources

5. 10. 2022

The renewal of the mandate of the Working Group on Strengthening the Functioning of the Multilateral System and Benefit Sharing from the Utilization of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture was one of the main achievements of the 9th Session of the Steering Committee of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.

The meeting of this highest body of the international treaty was held in New Delhi, India, from 19 to 25 September 2022 and was attended by 600 delegates. The Czech delegation, consisting of representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and external experts on plant genetic resources from the Research Institute of Plant Production, coordinated and promoted the common positions of the European Union throughout the meeting.

The advantages of the multilateral system, which consist in easy and free transfer of plant genetic resources between genebanks and variety breeders or other research institutes, are also used by Czech plant genebanks.

The International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources is important for farmers and seed producers and is a key link and contribution to global food security. The Czech Republic has long been involved in efforts to securely back plant genetic resources important for food and agriculture. We hold around 55 000 items of crop genetic resources in our genebanks and have also sent part of this genetic diversity for long-term conservation to the Global Plant Genetic Resources Repository in Spitsbergen.

The main objectives of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture are the conservation of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, their sustainable use and the equitable sharing of benefits arising from their use, in accordance with the Convention on Biological Diversity. The obligations arising from the Czech Republic's membership of this international treaty are fulfilled by the legislation adopted, i.e. Act No 148/2003 Coll., on genetic resources of plants and micro-organisms, and by the practical implementation of the strategy of the Ministry of Agriculture - the National Programme for the Conservation and Utilisation of Genetic Resources of Plants, Animals and Micro-organisms of Importance for Food and Agriculture.
