Management of watercourses

Bodies involved in the administration of watercourses under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Agriculture ensure the administration of more than 94% of the length of all watercourses in the Czech Republic. The Ministry of Defence, the administrative bodies of national parks and natural persons and legal entities have a share of approximately 6% in the administration of watercourses.

Watercourses in the Czech Republic are divided into significant watercourses and small watercourses. Significant watercourses of a total length of around 16.413 km and small watercourses of a total length of 40,928km are administered by the “Povodí” state enterprises, i.e. Povodí Vltavy, státní podnik, Povodí Ohře, státní podnik, Povodí Labe, státní podnik, Povodí Odry, státní podnik and Povodí Moravy, s.p. Other watercourses are administered by Lesy České republiky, státní podnik (Czech Forestry Commission - 38,495 km).

The inland position of the Czech Republic in the heart of Central Europe predetermines its relation to the European river network. From the hydrological viewpoint it may be called „the roof of Europe“. The basic hydrographic system according to the Central Register of Watercourses is constituted by approx. 100,800 km of watercourses (with both natural and regulated stream channels). Watercourses on the territory of the Czech Republic are divided into two categories: significant watercourses and minor watercourses. Professional management of watercourses in 2015 was carried out in accordance with the provisions of Section 47 of the Water Act.

Forests of the Czech Republic, s. e., carries out the management of the specified minor watercourses and torrents as one of non-production forest functions. At present, the Forests of the Czech Republic carries out the management of more than 38 thousand km of watercourses.
